(2)  Thomas Coppinger

He was the second son of Stephen, who died in 1600.  Stephen, the subject of four post-mortem Inquisitions, held all the city and suburban property now owned by his descendant minor John Coppinger O'Connell, besides the townsland of Killacloyne and Granacloyne, comprising 600 English acres in the Barony of Barrymore, not far from Queenstown Junction.  Stephen, designated Alderman in some and Gentleman in other documents, was the owner of Ballyvolane and head of his branch of the family.  His eldest son William succeeded him, and only lived 6 years, having married, but died without issue.

Thomas Coppinger was born in 1578; and we find that in the very year he came in for his property he was fined £60 for not attending Protestant worship.  Sir John Davys, the Lord President of Munster, and Sir Henry Brunckner, sat in Trinity term, 1606, and fined sundry Popish recusants.  The fines of thirteen resolute Catholics, ranging from £40 to £100, are given in Prendergast's Calendar to the State papers of James I.  The maximum penalty is imposed on Walter Copinger, gentleman, subsequently known as Sir Walter; and a very respectable penalty of £60 is imposed on Thomas Coppinger, gentleman.  He (Thomas) died in 1635, and the following is a copy of his funeral entry in the College of Arms:-

Thomas Coppinger alias Coppinger chief of the name in the Kingdom of Ireland, sometime Mayor of Cork:  He was the 2d son of Stephen Coppinger of the same Esqre. and Mayor of the same departed this mortal life at Cork aforesd the 24th of December 1635 and was interred in Christ's Church in Cork aforesd.  The defunct took to wife Catherine daughter of John Coppinger of the same Alderman by whom he had 2 sons and 2 daughters viz: Stephen son and heir of the defunct, married to Ellis daur of Henry Gould of Cork Alderman deceased; John the 2d son as yet unmarried;  Catherine the eldest daur of the defunct mard to Francis Roche of the same gentn; Joan the 2d daur of the sd defunct as yet  unmarried.  The truth of the premisses is testified by the subscription of Stephen Coppinger afsd who hath returned this certificate to be recorded in the office of Ulster King of Arms.  Taken this 23rd day of June 1636.
